I would like to teach and impart my knowledge to my students. Yet, I notice that they sometimes do not listen to me especially when I use the traditional style of teaching. Even if I say that phones are not allowed in class, they find ways in order to check their social media accounts. They can tweet that they are bored with what I am saying. They may even take pictures of the seatwork that they have to do while commenting that they have “no idea” about what they are going to do.
This has prompted me to make some changes with the way that I teach over the past years. I truly want the students to learn so I have made some effort in learning more about the visual arts. I have started checking social media websites. I have learned more about the terms that the new generation is using. This has made me relate to my students more. There is one issue though: I have noticed that in order to make an appealing lesson, it will take me hours before I can finish with one. This can be hard especially when I am handling more than one class. I expect that a lot of other educators are going through the same issues too.
I have realized that there are some things that I can do that can make teaching the new generation easier without having to spend too much time creating lessons. I have started to get more visuals from Pinterest and sometimes Instagram. I get the source of the images and I show them to my class. I have realized that every time there are visuals involved, they are usually more engaged and more willing to listen to what I have to say. This shows that the visuals are here to stay so they are absolutely necessary. Yet, I still want my students to realize that learning through traditional teaching is possible. These are some other lessons that I have learned about teaching the students of today: - I can go on and on about the various facts that I have learned about the lessons but if I do not tell a story, the students will not catch what I am trying to say. Instead of spending a long time looking for “interesting” facts, I try to find a story that is related to the lesson that I want the students to learn. They usually end up listening more because who does not want a great story, right? - The more that the students can relate, the better they will absorb the information that you are trying to tell them. People would like to feel that the things that they are learning are useful in their lives. If you would only tell information that they do not find important, expect that they will not pay attention to you at all. - Keep things simple. You may want to talk about things that are profound in order to inspire. Take note that you are teaching information. You need to keep things simple. The more that the students understand what you are trying to say, the better that they will grasp what you are trying to tell them. Even with all of the tips that are mentioned above, you sometimes cannot help but wonder if making more effort will be worth it. In the consulting business, it is not actually an unnecessary distraction. It is now considered to be a necessity. I want educators to realize that sometimes, old school teaching will still work. Going Back to Old-School Teaching Making modern lesson plans can be fun and exciting but you have to admit that it is so time-consuming. There are things that you can do so that you can teach your students the traditional way without having to spend so much time on modern and visually-appealing lesson plans. - Motivate your students to read. If there is one thing that is gaining popularity right now, it is the joy of reading. It is true that most books now are made into movies but students are starting to realize that there are things written in books that movies cannot capture. - Think of activities that can be done inside the classroom that will make learning more fun. You do not have to rely on technology to make this happen. Some usual classroom games will be sufficient. It will allow you to teach your lessons without having to rely on visuals all the time. - Provide rewards. There are a lot of students who are still happy whenever they are rewarded whether for an extra grade or a true gift. Doing these things will help you realize that students still have some simple joys in life. You do not have to make your teaching methods fully modern in order to help students learn. By allowing students to learn in a more simple manner, they may realize that things do not have to be complicated. They can learn without the extra frills easily.
