You want to always be right, you want your opinion to be THE opinion, then ask someone just like you!💩
BUT inclusive systems cannot be based on any part of groupthink- otherwise we risk including ALL.....in other words, we remain (or slow our journey) exclusive. The problem with groupthink is that everyone thinks the same: one thought! This might reduce conflict in the front, but it will increase the likelihood of exclusionary practices becoming normal. Think about it: one perspective will lead to one perspective setting the course for action- instead of a variety of perspectives shaping the action together..... groupthink avoids the notion raised but the veil of ignorance.
Behind the veil of ignorance, no one knows anything about themselves: their class, their experiences, their religion, their nationality, their gender, their struggles, their privileges, and even their personality. The veil of ignorance removes the very parts of us that make us unique in order to avoid bias shaping our decisions in order to create a fair and just society. OBVIOUSLY this is not something that can ever be done in 'real life', but it raises a great point.
It is our experiences, our beliefs, and our upbringing (among other things) that make us us. It is these very things that create bias, prejudice, and inform our thoughts and actions. We cannot hide these unique aspects of us. We cannot only live in a society with people who share mostly the same beliefs and experiences as us. We need to let these (or some of these) traits shine, but we cannot let them inform every decision we make. We need to accept that there are multiple beliefs, multiple truths, and multiple perspectives that are valuable.
REMEMBER, difference is normal. Groupthink takes away the normalcy in being different and thinking differently. Groupthink perpetuates the meeting/normal vs not meeting/‘special ed’ cycle. 👎
As we spend the last few weeks or days in our schools- start to ask the question WHY. Challenge what is always done (nicely)- sometimes it is the smallest change or thought that makes the BIGGEST impact✨
