I love the metaphor of children as puzzle pieces or individual pieces of a puzzle. All these little unique balls of energy that come together to make a beautiful picture. This picture represents community- big or small, school or family. The notion that each piece, no matter its shape, comes together to create something awesome is important. It is important because, often, we struggle with pieces that are not what we expect or pieces that do not easily fit.
When pieces do not easily fit we have two main choices:
1) give up or deal with what we know and then come to the other pieces. Sometimes we do this alone, other times, we ask for help, and on occasion, we just move on.
2) create a plan to navigate all the pieces: hit up the outside pieces in order to easily support the inside.... sounds a little bit like the 7-10 split?
The first choice is the easiest and the most straight forward- less planning & less work. The second choice requires more thought & more planning- but the results are a beautiful ending. As well, the journey is a little easier since you have created a thoughtful & meaningful plan.✨
This same concept can be applied to an inclusive space: jump in with little thought or planning and you will become frustrated and, possibly, lost. BUT with careful thought and reflection in the very beginning- and throughout, your lessons become easier and more connected for all.
